Resumen

Wastewater is generated by different activities of man, which contains toxic pollutants in its structure that cause serious damage to the environment. The objective was to carry out a bibliographic review on wastewater in the quality of river water. A search was carried out in databases such as: Science Direct, EBSCO, Scielo, BASE, DOAJ, Dialnet and Redalyc using Boolean terms such as and, or, not, using descriptors "wastewater" "contamination" "river water quality". ” and “river water pollution”; Likewise, institutional repositories at the local, national and international level were searched, applying filters of publications related to contamination of surface sources (rivers) by wastewater, determining that there is environmental contamination. It is concluded that wastewater causes environmental pollution problems in rivers, generating a negative impact on aquatic ecosystems due to the alteration of the physical, chemical and microbiological characteristics of the water, in addition to the eutrophication process due to the excessive growth of algae and other aquatic plants that consume a large part of dissolved oxygen, affecting aquatic life and death by asphyxiation to fauna and flora. Therefore, it is necessary that wastewater from sources: domestic, industrial or municipal have adequate treatment
